At once hyperalert and calmly attentive in our consideration of the urban environment we each negotiate a route delineating the parameters of our presence in social/local/virtual/temporal space. Like hot neutrons confounding misaligned control rods, like errant radionuclides settling on swaying anemones, like beta particles spiralling up cloud and bubble chambers. Like gamma ray crystallography, like a Guy Debordian psychogeography the pieces of Situation Critical resolve for an instant to cast a superluminal blue glow over the strictures of social control and red shift our mental maps for easier assimilation. You are here, amongst the traders of lost and found glyphs and objects in the duty free bazaar adjunct to this dislocated starship landing pad.

Distanciation*
A play in three acts.

The white cube as a fixed entity exists no more. It demands reinvention as an open, unbound space in which the spectator is witness and creator. It is in this arena that our play unfolds.

Act One

The scene is set.

Four painters come together in the gallery space to collaborate as a social practice, for and with the community.

Materials are sourced (scrounged, bartered, borrowed or bought) locally.

Act Two

Complication.

The work evolves collaboratively without preconceptions or plans.
Conflicts arise, problems present themselves, the space asserts its immutable logic.

Act Three

Climax.

The audience is admitted. People move through the space and among the work, becoming part of the installation and its evolution. The work attains unity or dissonance.

* A Brechtian concept that discourages involving the audience in an illusory narrative world and in the emotions of an artwork, but instead exposes the mechanics of performance allowing the viewer to critically and consciously engage with the complete experience of an artwork

‘Just Families’, is a photographic documentary that takes us inside the daily lives of ordinary families with same sex parents. Ginette Snow looks at the similarities between these families and  heterosexual families rather than looking at the one difference. The love, the care, the patience, friendship, fun, and chaos, the humour, the reliability, the teaching, the laughter, the listening and of course the problem solving.

There is no reason why these families and their parents do not have the same rights that other families and their parents have.  That is the right for the parents to get married.

At the end of the day there is a moment of truth. A time that exists where the balance of day and night is palpable. An instant when the neural synapses fire a thought process that takes us back to the origins of our reptilian brains.

Are we prey or predator, black or white, lost or found, mortal or spirit?

Whose eyes do we look through? Are they our own or do we have an eternal interpreter who insists our viewpoints are based not on our experience of life and living but on something more…

In the new technological age we are no-one if we are not connected and yet our experiences of the world differ so greatly as to be beyond comprehension. We exist in a paradox, for in each time and place that we dwell in real time there is a shadow that is recorded and transcribed into another parallel time frame.

Have we discovered the real essence of time travel? Or has the human race become just a mere cipher of itself? An adjunct to the history of the world that is dominated by technology…

In this body of work, I examine these questions by exploring the relationships between people and their environment at twilight. In unrelated incidences it seems that there is a universal tension and a burgeoning feeling of fear and uncertainty, a worrying thought of who we might be or become in the darkness of the night.

Drawn from my experience as a photojournalist the photographic tableaux have been shot in random moments and locations across Australia.

Ludovica Gioscia presented a new body of work created during her Marrickville Council residency. For this show Gioscia continued her investigation of the cycle of destruction perpetuated by consumerism in which old markets and the products that have sustained them have to disappear for new ones to emerge. Pack, store & clean focuses on the strategy of compression: both in terms of condensation of data such as in zip files, waste compaction­ and household storage.

“Every technological object is the echo of thought made manifest in matter. Often a subtle understanding of complex processes is involved, enabling a particular function. These objects, embodiments of thought and understanding, often exist beyond the realm of common experience, obscured either by the complexity of their nature, or concealed as military or industrial secrets. While such things may be the product of creative intelligence and understanding, yet the creator is unacknowledged, anonymous. Echoes of Unknown Thought is a visual textbook, a documentation and a tribute to various devices, reflections of the thoughts of past creators, mostly unknown.”
