Arbitrarium of Disappointed Things 20–29 Jan 2011
Renee Falez combines the anarchic insolence of punk with the colorful irreverence of The Day of the Dead, mixing sorrow and anger with celebration. Working in printmaking, cardboard, paper mache, and other found and improvised material, she creates a crude universe of careless effigies. At once joyful and destructive, sorrowful and defiant, these objects stand as totems raised in defense against the hostility of the world they evoke. Renee’s work is haunted by a sense of protest that is at once resigned and insistent. The result is a defiance that passes through the social object to wrestle with the mortality that informs them.
